BALLASTS (HYLUXTEK 2A88) - This is the most important component in an HID kit because this is what provides the power. HYLUXTEK is proven and universally identified as one of the very best ballast manufacturer in the industry. They manufacture many style HID ballasts but the “2A88 Slim” is one of the main flagship ballasts for the brand. Much of the technology included in the “2A88 Slim” ballasts got them to this point but the attention is mainly surrounding a very key component of the ballast known as the “controller / controller chip”. This controls all functions of the ignition & lamp steady state procedure and ultimately makes or breaks HID function and quality.
Controller Chip (ASIC) - There are two kinds of controller chips used in ballast technology, the standardized “central processing unit” (CPU) controller chip (cheaper programming & development cost (roughly $3,000) and unfortunately an industry standard) and the “application-specific integrated circuit” (ASIC) controller chip (much higher programming & development cost (roughly $600,000) and thus not as commonly used).
1) CPU Controller Chip – Because the CPU program is easy to copy and very low cost you see hundreds of companies developing HID ballasts with generic CPU Controller Chips under many different names. Many of these ballasts do work decently well but are unable to monitor the HID lights correctly. This inability to monitor the lights correctly means that light power changes often making the lights progressively more difficult to control. This overworks the ballasts and the outcome is inconsistency that leads to blowing bulbs, burning out ballasts, and ultimately the culprit in high failure and defect rates in HID kits.
2) ASIC Controller Chip – The cost behind this technology keeps it limited to a very small handful of ballast manufactures. CAN-BUS Technology - Many newer vehicles have systems that sense power consumption and adjust output based on information being received. Since HIDs use less power than factory halogen bulbs, this can often cause powering & failure issues. Often times you can resolve this by adding capacitors, known as warning cancellers, or some ballasts come with them built-in. In many cases however, these parts are ineffective due to the advanced nature of the systems in place on the vehicle. Furthermore many of these newer vehicle systems use pulse-width-modulation (PWM) to drive headlights, which basically sends a pulsing power signal to power the lights to help extend bulb life. This is great technology for halogen bulbs but can be damaging to HID components if not circumvented correctly. The solution to these issues is known as a CAN-BUS module. This module is designed specifically for smoothing PWM signals up to 100hz, and providing feedback to the vehicle to equalize the load. This will defeat even the most troublesome modern vehicle systems, and even if your vehicle does not share these issues, the module will still provide a smoother power flow for reliable operation. Simply put, this ballast will work on any vehicle, the first time you plug it in, and no need to worry about capacitors, warning cancellers, or resistors.
Igniter and Startup - Igniter issues when starting your lights up are common in inferior ballasts, especially in cold climates. Small igniters that are not rated for extreme temperatures are generally the issue. HYLUXTEK uses an OEM-grade 24kV external igniter that is tested and proven to ignite seamlessly even in the coldest temperatures (rated for up to -40 degree operating temps). Additionally, the ASIC chip in these ballasts requires very little power (only 4 amps at nominal voltage) to start up. Ballast Housing - The ballast housing is completely filled & potted making for a solid structure that is fully waterproof and shockproof. The input wires are each a meter long, and the output wires are one meter and two meters, which means the wiring will be long enough for even the biggest vehicles.
Do I Need This? - The wiring harness relay is an optional part and is NOT required for operation of the HID kit in most vehicles. However, please be aware that some vehicles may require it for operation. In the rare case this is needed it is because the factory wiring harness cannot supply the appropriate voltage required to power up the ballasts and properly ignite the HID capsules. Symptoms indicating the Wiring Harness Relay is required in conjunction with your HID Kit would be inconsistency with the HID lights turning on or the lights going out after being turned on for several minutes. The issue of the HID lights turning them selves off usually requires you to switch them off and back on to get them to turn back on again. This Harness will fix these issues.
